Meet the Artist:

Interview with Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole is a contemporary abstract artist whose vibrant and dynamic works have captivated audiences around the world.

Tell us about your creative work and career. What should we know?

As a contemporary abstract artist, my creative journey over the past 6 years painting has allowed me to explore what freedom means to me from all aspects. My work reflect a deep appreciation for jazz, the African diaspora, nature, and the overall human experience. I also draw inspiration from the history of the abstract artist that came before me such as Mary Lovelace O'Neal, Jack Whitten, Basquiat, and many more. My portfolio showcases a range of pieces on non stretched canvas cut and uniquely shaped that expresses freedom in the process of creating. Through color mark making and intricate details I strive to create a visual experience that will resonate with viewers for years to come. This year I have had the honor of exhibiting my work in New Jersey at Novado Gallery, in Europe for a second time, and Philadelphia at Rush Arts. I have also taken an independent curational role and am excited to see how that goes. This year has been an exciting year for my art, I plan to use the second half of the year to create new work, explore and experiment new approaches while refining my personal style.

How do you balance your personal life and your art practice?

I like to think that my personal life and art life are beautifully intertwined. I am a mother an artist and I work full time in the medical field. I have the most supportive children and art has been a part of their lives as much as it has been apart of mine. Through the highs and lows they have encouraged me to keep going. Though my goal is to create full time work allows me to provide during low seasons and to study during down time. I typically paint every weekend, I actually have a pretty set schedule that allows me to create spend time at home and have me time. If I am not creating I am studying art or doing something art related which I enjoy. I am very goal driven but I do understand how important balance is, so I make a point to have fun as well. It is not always easy but it is all worth it.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting their art career?

My advice to an artist just starting their art career is that, your passion and perseverance will be the key. Always remember your reason why. I would say embrace your unique artistic voice and if you have not found it yet, don't stop experimenting and learning until you do. Even when you have found your voice still keep exploring techniques and styles to discover what truly resonates with you. Be open to constructive criticism and feed back, it can really help you grow and improve as an artist. Build a network of fellow artists, mentors, and art professionals who can help guide you and stay committed. I have personally benefited from mentorship in fact my mentor asked me one question that changed my outlook on art all together and I now ask this question to artists who seek advice, "What do you want from your art?" once you can answer that, you work and study until you find out. All in all stay committed to your craft, rejection is a part of the process, and forever be a student.

What do you want people to understand or take away from your creative work?

Because my creative process gives me a sense of self discovery. I want my viewers and collectors to experience the same. I hope that people can find a personal connection and meaning through my work. Each piece is a reflection of my subconscious, a window into my perspectives, and I invite viewers to also explore their own interpretations. There are stories told through my abstract pieces and I aim to evoke curiosity, reflection, and emotional resonance, encouraging individuals to engage with the artwork on a deeper level. Its also okay if the viewer simply thinks the work is pretty. Whether its through contemplation, inspiration or even a simple appreciation for aesthetics, I want the work to enrich the lives of those who encounter it.

What exciting endeavors lie ahead for you? What can our community anticipate from your future ventures, and how can they support?

I am excited to start a new series after months of traveling and exhibiting. It has been a beautiful experience and I am certain these experiences will reflect in my new works. I am also excited to step into an independent curational role. I am truly an advocate for black abstract artists and I plan to share that passion publicly very soon. The community can support by simply sharing my work and my endeavors, come out to any exhibitions that I am apart of. I also love to receive grant opportunities and articles and new reads.
