Meet the Artist:

Interview with Courtney Simone

Bringing my ideas to life through visual form resonates with my heart the most. Sometimes this looks like a series of colorful wall art for your home, and other times it’s making some funky and unique pieces of wearable art, also known as jewelry. However it’s presented, making things is my jam!

Where are you in your creative journey? How did you get there?

I love this question, as it states, "Creative Journey." A journey is ongoing, and something that ultimately doesn't need a destination. When I look at it this way, I can say that my journey has had its ups and downs. Currently, my creative journey looks like me navigating being an artist, while working a full time job. I haven't had too many art gigs, or creative opportunities at the moment, as I have found myself trying to balance work, art, social, and family life. One thing I know for sure, is that because this is a journey, I'll find myself back on the path that leads me to creative exploration.

Has community impacted your artlife and style? If so, how so?

Community has had a huge impact on my art life and style in so many ways. When I first started sharing my art on instagram, it felt like I was speaking into the void. I didn't have connections, or art friends, so it was day in and day out of just sharing my work, hoping that just one person would resonate. After some years of putting myself out there, I started to see traction when it came to making connections with people who share similar interests as me in the creative space. I even met some amazing art friends I travel with now once a year. Were going to Colorado next week! The most important thing community has done for me is show me that I am not alone, when it comes to creating art. There are so many of us who are making art alone in our rooms and studios, and though we may enjoy it like that (If we are true introverts), but we also need connection. I am grateful for the connections I've made online, and continue to make through my art and creativity.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting their art career?

My advice would be to just keep creating. I know when you're starting out, there is this pressure to find your "art" style as soon as possible, where you end up making art that doesn't feel authentic to you just for the sake of making art. Its so easy to get caught up in following trends, where we can easily lose ourselves, and the voice we want to share. My advice would be to just simply keep creating. Don't worry about following trends, or discovering a style right away. I believe your personal art style will come to you as you continue to create. Just make the art you enjoy to create, and your style will find you.

What does success in the art world look like for you?

Success in the art world looks like having the space and freedom to create the art you love. I don't mean this in the literal sense, though that would be nice. Having the space and freedom to create the art you love means simply to be able to let go of what everyone else says you should create, and make the art that brings you joy. When you can create from a space of love, it truly shows within your work.

What exciting endeavors lie ahead for you? What can our community anticipate from your future ventures, and how can they support?

I am looking forward to creating a new art series soon that expands from the art I have now. I have been interested in making some small sculpture works inspired by the art I currently create. I am also looking forward to making some bigger art pieces as well, and expanding in size.
