Interview with Lee Frances
If you were to summarize the essence and intention of your art in just 2 to 3 sentences, how would you describe it?
My intention is to feel me in some way in every image. Sometimes the images are motivated by my mood, sometimes a story I created. But I love choosing images that make people feel something.
In your bio you mention using AI to extend your artistic ability. Can you elaborate on the role that technology plays in your creative vision and execution?
All my images start with Ai and then I tweak them to match the images I have in my mind. It is a long process sometimes because I know what I want to see based on my imagination, and sometimes the Ai needs encouragement and tweaking. I also use Adobe and a few other programs to get the images exactly where I want them to be.
What are the primary messages or ideas you aim to convey through your AI-powered art? How do you want your work to impact viewers?
I want people, especially black women to see themselves, their sisters, the mothers, cousins, and aunties in almost every image. I want my work to make people feel, and I don’t care what people feel as long as they feel something!
Your work contributes to diversity in the Sci-Fi genre. How important is representation in your art, and what impact do you hope to make in this regard?
I create for me primarily. I don’t do this with a “representation matters” perspective. I do it for me honestly. I am a black women who is a sci-fi nerd. I want to see and create stories that excite and feed that part of me. But I know if I exist and enjoy this work, others must be out there too.
Are there any new themes, techniques, or collaborations you are particularly excited to explore in your upcoming projects?
I’m working on some Ai animations and using Ai imagery to bring visuals to some of my stories and scripts. Sometimes my writing inspires the images and sometimes my images inspire my writing.
What exciting endeavors lie ahead for you? What can our community anticipate from your future ventures, and how can they support?
You can expect a few short stories, a comic and some really awesome collabs! As I let my imagination run wild, my opportunities and contributions expand too. I’m really excited to be in this space.
