Meet the Artist:

Interview with Michael Reeder

Michael Reeder is an Urban Contemporary artist hailing from Dallas, TX. His artistic practice involves the utilization of diverse mediums and techniques not commonly paired within traditional painting.

Where are you in your creative journey? How did you get there?

I am currently at a point in my artistic journey where I feel both accomplished and eager for more growth. Although I have gained valuable knowledge and experiences along the way, I acknowledge there is still much more to discover and create. I realize that I have yet to make my best work, and that is my primary motivator in the studio. Throughout my artistic career, I have dedicated countless hours to practicing and honing my skills. I believe that continuous learning is crucial in order to evolve as an artist. I seek inspiration from a variety of sources, constantly immersing myself in new ideas and perspectives. My creative journey is a constant process of self-discovery and boundary-pushing. I am always seeking new ways to challenge myself, exploring different techniques and mediums. This dedication to growth is what fuels my passion for art.

Has community impacted your artlife and style? If so, how so?

Community plays a crucial role in shaping my art life and style. Thanks to the advent of social media, I have been able to connect with talented artists from all over the world, breaking geographical barriers and transcending artistic genres. This online art community has provided me with opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions about various mediums and techniques. It has also allowed me to gain valuable insights and perspectives from experienced artists who have been in the industry for a long time. This exposure to a diverse range of ideas and experiences has greatly influenced my artistic evolution.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting their art career?

Your artwork should represent a balanced mashup of your experiences, interests, and skillsets. Focusing on these elements will more easily allow you to carve out your own unique style and subject matter. The idea of inspiration typically steals the spotlight, but I feel that motivation is the real MVP. Staying motivated is one of the most challenging elements of being an artist. When the hours get longer and the days stack up into months while trying to meet a deadline, you need to know how to keep your focus and motivation sustained at a high level. Additionally, some of the most extraordinary ideas and concepts come to life during the process of creating artwork rather than waiting for a grand vision to appear in sketches or preliminary studies.

What does success in the art world look like for you?

While it is common for success in the art world to be measured by accolades like critic reviews, awards, and publications, my definition of success goes beyond fame or financial gain. To me, true success lies in creating profound connections through my artwork and leaving a lasting impact on viewers for generations to come.

What exciting endeavors lie ahead for you? What can our community anticipate from your future ventures, and how can they support?

I currently have a solo show titled 'Brain Storm' at Allouche Gallery in Los Angeles and will also have a painting on display in Allouche's booth at Art Miami. In addition, my first bronze sculpture edition is in the works, a wall hanging mirror edition, custom wallpaper, and more prints!!
